On the weekend of 19th and 20th July there will be a unique
event at Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre: "Relay For Life".
It brings together communities, survivors and those who have
been touched by cancer to celebrate life, spend 24 hours
having fun and games, do a little exercise, and hopefully
raise some money for Cancer Research UK into the bargain..
Relay For Life Horsham runs overnight from 12 noon on
Saturday 19th July until 12 noon on Sunday 20th July,
includes a Survivors' Lap of Honour, a moving Candle of Hope
Ceremony, and masses of fun and entertainment.
Survivors are invited to attend event as VIPs, and the
opening lap will be the Survivors lap of honour – a
celebration of life for those who have beaten cancer and a
sign of hope for those fighting cancer. All survivors are
treated to a VIP reception and they can stay and participate
in as much or as little of the rest of the event as they
choose.
Teams of 8 or more then take turns walking laps, as the rest
of the team run a stall or entertainment of their choosing.
Each team tries to keep at least one member on the track at
all times, whilst all around them the party is in full swing
with their supporters and visitors from the Horsham area,
creating a fantastic and memorable atmosphere.
At dusk will be the Candle of Hope ceremony, the most
inspirational and moving part of the whole event. This is
where people dedicate a Candle to someone who has been lost
to, is fighting, or has beaten cancer. Each candle is in a
flame-proof paper bag and they will all be placed around the
edge of the track and will be lit as darkness falls. Each
bag will have the person's name on and can be decorated.
Imagine a huge summer fete with music, stalls and
entertainment surrounded by hundreds of people walking
around the sports track and hundreds of glowing candles. The
emphasis on the day is to celebrate life, and to make a
difference in the future with the money raised leading up to
the event.
